[Clearly the best way to delay all those initial newbie questions is to arrive when weird shit is going on.

[It's just after sunset when Toji opens his eyes - or is it just before sunrise? One of those times of day when the twilight overhead is bright enough to be able to see, but the lack of sun or stars to tell time with is the least of his concerns right now. The more pressing question is where the hell is he, and why?

He sits up, beginning to drag a hand over his face but he stops pretty quickly when he realizes his palm is covered in rough grains of sand. Ow. There's sand everywhere, and it doesn't take long for him to get it's because he's right on the beach. It's pretty weird to see white sand, sparkling clear water, and a lack of half-submerged old buildings all over the place, but it's... relaxing. He watches the waves until the sun finally comes up (guess it's morning after all) and he can't ignore the nagging feeling that this isn't right at all. Besides the strange beach, there's the fact that he can't remember what he was doing before whatever made him pass out to wake up here, and this weird uniform he's wearing. It's not from any high school he's familiar with, but but said school has to be around here somewhere, and it seems like a good place to figure out what's going on. And who dressed him, because wow, that's kind of creepy.

And so begins the standard newbie scenario: A fresh face looking lost, asking what must be the usual questions by now. Maybe you overhear him asking an NPC or are the one being approached with...
]

Hey-- [He should probably be a little more polite...] --Pardon me, but could you tell me where I am?

[...Or maybe by the time you run into him he's already got the standard information and is just quietly exploring the area, or asking other people in hopes for an answer that is one he wants to hear.]

[There's a small boy with big red eyes walking around in the school, who looks to be around five or six years old. He's a quiet one and looks like he's spent some time crying... And honestly, looks like he might burst into tears again at any moment. Hey, you'd cry too if you suddenly found yourself in an unknown school, okay!

If he's spotted you breaking a rule, he will follow you around everywhere you go. I'm not kidding, this kid will shadow you, albeit not a very stealthily. He'll look like he really wants to say something, but he can't seem to work up the courage.

And if you're an older student who's not breaking any rules (that he knows of)? You will suddenly find yourself with this tearful kid next to you, possibly even clinging to your sleeve.]

[ Here's a kid. Not a very happy kid. He looks between really annoyed and really terrified and he certainly has no clue what's going on. This Kohaku is not nearing his 20s like usually, but rather he seems around 10 years old and pretty scrawny. He's carrying a white violin that he seems to be holding on to for dear life.

Seeing he does not really know what to make of this place, he's mostly walking around aimlessly and warily. Somehow he's gotten to the dorms this way, so don't be surprised if you find this kid in your hall. Maybe even sitting down in front of your door, just staring ahead. He'll move away defensively when you approach him though.]

[It's been a day since everyone has (hopefully) arrived in the Guild. After discussing it with Yuri, Hinata, and Naoi, Otonashi decides it's probably a good idea to give everyone a basic lowdown on what's going on, and what they can do in the mean time. As such, he gets on one of the old computers to send out a message.]

Hey everyone. It's Otonashi. As I'm sure you have all noticed by now, shadows have overrun the entirety of the surface, forcing us to come down here to the Guild. I hope you've all made it safely down here. If not, let me know and we can find a way to send someone up to get you.

Anyway, basically, Guild is a big industrial place. It was used as a headquarters for the SSS to make weapons. It's all the way down here to keep out intruders (I'm sure you're all familiar with those booby traps now), which obviously turned out to be helpful in this situation... I figured it'd be a good idea to let you all know what's down here, considering how we don't know how long we'll be forced to stay. There are close-quarters apartments you can all stay in. If you haven't noticed already, the river runs through here, so water isn't a problem. We have rods around so you can fish if you need food. Hinata also brought down non-perishables from the cafeteria and convenience store on the surface, so we have those too. We don't have unlimited resources though, so please don't unnecessarily binge on food. We need to make due with what we have. If it's absolutely necessary someone could go up and get more, but... as you've seen, it's really dangerous.

There are also computers floating around, but they're extremely slow and I'm pretty sure dinosaurs used them. This thing took me a while to boot just so I could type up this message. But it's something at least.

Lastly, needless to say, we need to figure out a way to get out. So if anyone has any ideas for plans to get out, speak up. Even if it's not a perfectly formed plan, it's fine. Every bit helps. Feel free to answer other people's messages too to add on to what they have to say or whatever. And if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I think that just about covers it, so... Stay safe, everyone. We'll get out of here soon. I promise.

[The campus was buzzing with activity, the students recently liberated from classes for lunch. The NPCs carefully walked around him as he lay on the ground, staring vacantly at the sky as he came to his senses. The fog over his mind cleared gradually, becoming aware of an unshakable sense of déjà vu descending upon him. The dark color of his jacket caught his peripheral vision, slowly sitting up in order to look down at himself. This uniform... he wasn't wearing this one a moment ago. In fact, he hadn't worn this particular uniform since...]

[Early in the afternoon, Otonashi can be found wandering around campus. Unlike his usual pointless I-Have-Nothing-Better-To-Do wandering though, this time he's looking for something. This fact is probably rather evident as well, considering how he's walking into classrooms, the library, the cafeteria... all while checking under their respective tables and desks, and all over the floor.

What's he looking for? Well you may just have to ask him and find out.]

[Eventually, his search takes him to the computer lab. He contemplates asking the network about whether or not they've seen his missing Something, but he figures he may as well not. After all, he already brought a lot of attention to that Something during his last post, ahem... And he figures with the NPCs and that weird guy acting strangely lately, keeping it off the network may be best.

...But anyway! There is at least one thing he could address, so he may as well do that while he's in here and taking a break from his searching. And so he leaves an audio recording.]

Hey, everyone. It looks like we got a lot of new people here recently, huh? Or at least it suddenly seems that way... But anyway, I guess I just wanted to go ahead and welcome you all here. I know it's not the best place to be in, all things considered, but yeah. I figure it's still worth saying.

[Or something... He just wants to try to be friendly and welcoming, okay!!! and not welcome people via "hi you're dead now watch me shoot this girl" like a certain someone here had done for him...]

Anyway, I'm Otonashi. I've been here for a while, longer than most of you, so if anyone needs help with anything, uh... feel free to ask me, alright? I know being here can be a little rough for some people, so I'd be happy to help.

tenminutes: (Villains never get to be happy.)
[personal profile] tenminutes
Hi everyone! This is Yuri Nakamura, sometimes called Yurippe, of the SSS. [ That sounded pretty cheerful, actually. Though not as peppy as before, the confident tone continues as Yuri explains. ] The SSS is an afterlife-based battlefront formerly dedicated to taking down God, presently dedicated to the investigation and defense against the shadows and other unfortunate accidents. I guess glitches would probably be the best thing to call them... Not all jobs require combat experience or intelligence if you're interested in helping out.

Anyway, there are a lot of new people here so I figured I'd both introduce myself and go over a few things, especially after the Angel Player AI posted something and I happen to.. have experience with him. Not a lot, since the last time I saw him I shot him. He's not at his former location, so there's no point in investigating there. There aren't any clues. Instead, I'm going to tell you all what I know about what this place is and how it works and if a damn one of you says anything weird I'll find you and kick your ass myself, got it?

Those of you who just got here: You're dead. This is the afterlife. Sorry for your loss. If you don't believe me, head up to the principal's office where the sign says "SSS HQ" at 11am tomorrow. The door's unlocked, but in polite society's we knock, so don't forget. [ Or else they'll become an example. ]

Second of all, pretty much everyone here has experienced some kind of tragedy or uncontrollable event in their life that made it unfair. Most people are young, but not everyone anymore. Some people may have some memory loss. Usually it will come back with time, since a lot of times the memory loss is related to head injuries when you died. Most of us died with a feeling of being unfulfilled or still wanting to hold on and keep fighting even after we died, however that may have been. The only way to get out of this place is to become fulfilled, accept your life, and move on but I'm not entirely sure that's going to work anymore.. though I can't really give details as to why on that yet. Either way, the key to staying here is to not live an entirely normal life. You can go to classes as long as you do something else that keeps you from being considered a "normal" student. It's really not that difficult as long as you want to stay, but just remember as long as you do whatever pain you feel is going to stay with you too.

That said, it's possible to manipulate the environment through a process called Atomic Restructuring. I've taught it to a couple of you, so those who learned please teach it to other people because I don't want to be stuck teaching it to however many people are here since it's a pain in the ass, but you can get pretty much anything you need that you have a good enough memory of to both know the parts and how to piece it together. The same capability to do that lead to an individual developing software known as "Angel Player." This software has the ability to manipulate the environment in ways that shouldn't be humanly possible, but unfortunately also is the reason for the shadows' appearances as well as, likely, the NPCs' strange behavior lately-- the NPCs are all of the regular students who aren't actually real. Think of them like really fleshy robots that are programmed pretty well to act like "normal" people, so much so that it'd be impossible for them to be human. They're basically like NPCs in a video game with limited lines who won't remember if you kicked their chicken or not. They're well programmed though, so if you kancho a girl, she'll still slap you across the face. Try it if you don't believe me.

Anyway, the Angel Player software essentially is something of a "God program" in this world. You can do anything you want with it, even make this world an eternal paradise if you want. [ She sounds a little amused at that, just because that was the offer given to her. ] That's not what this world is for and I personally refused that offer when it was given to me. The current programming, however, states that this is not intended to be an eternal paradise and posits that there is a single way to get you stuck in this world.

Essentially, the emotion of love is a dangerous thing in this world. Not by itself, but when love is felt strongly enough, then it gets taken away, it can hurt enough to get a person stuck here forever. That's why the programmer created the Angel Player program, because he was that kind of person. He fell in love, but she disappeared before he did and he loved her so much that he waited for her for years and years until it started to drive him insane. So he programmed Angel Player and those shadows to turn people into NPCs if they detect the presence of active love within this afterlife that's strained to the point of breaking because of how much pain it's causing. Either because you lost the one person you fell in love with or you knew that all of your friends were going to be taken away one by one until you were the only one left.

Since it's incapable of detecting the source of said love or whether or not that person would want to give that up, the shadows just go after everyone until the emotion stops because the person has been cut off from their emotions and turned into an NPC. That wasn't fair, so I completely destroyed the system and its watcher, that weird NPC with the flippy blue hair who kind of seems like a stalker, instead of accepting the offer I got to become God. Even if it was really tempting, but that'd be unfair to other people.. --Anyway! I kind of suspect that the programming's changed a little bit, especially since there are different types of people here than before, and there's been all kinds of weird crap happening too, but that's what I know about it.

In summary: hi, you're dead, watch out for the shadows because that's what they're doing, and don't get obliterated. If you have more questions, reply to this or if you think you'd rather strategize in person, consider joining the SSS. The headquarters is located on the third floor of the administration building where the principal's office should be. And don't forget: A demonstration for anyone who doesn't believe that we're dead at 11:00am tomorrow at the SSS. I don't bite and I'm not going to do anything crazy violent unless you forget to knock. Promise!

[ OOC: Meeting at 11AM to prove 'hey we're all dead!' Otherwise, just comment with how your character is responding-- text, video, voice, action if they went to find her. Whatever. ]

I didn't know Hope's Peak Academy had a messenger system. Does this go to our student passes, maybe? It seems a little underdeveloped, but... I'm relieved! Something like this is so nice.

[He smiles a little, rocking his feet on his ankles beneath the desk, and lets out a hum.]

I wonder if I'm even talking to anyone, it's a little silly of me to think that the others would bother with computers like this...

If anyone's there, I'm in the library this morning, so I'm terribly sorry for missing breakfast. I think I fell asleep here last night.

A.) Video

[ Yeah, those videos the owners didn't know were being posted? Have one of those. There's a court yard, apparently belonging to a rich castle or something, In a cage, there is raging zombies. In front of them there is a little boy, playing the violin and an older man accompanying him. The sound of his violin appears to make the zombies sing along. The daughter of the castle's owner demands to have that violin bought for herself. The little boy, appearing to be a much younger Kohaku, refuses. She is enraged and releases the zombies at him. It appears the music of the violin protects the boy with ease, but his suspected father falls victim to their attacks. The flashback and transmission ends there. ]

B.) Action

[ If you're in the school, you might be noticing violin music. Not just any violin music - you can tell that the one playing the violin here is skilled beyond compare. Despite playing solo, his soft and clear sound reaches the heart. It's almost fragile, you can't grasp it and yet it brings a certain sentimentality over you.
If you happen to find the orchestra room, you will see Kohaku being the source of these sounds that are so contradictory to his personality. His usually angry or annoyed face is full of peace and concentration as he plays - this is him, his essence. Only sometimes he frowns. He's used to a much better violin, something special and the one he plays now is ordinary at best. He tuned it as well as he can, but it just isn't the same. Still, it's better than being without music.

[During the whole shadow fiasco, Otonashi came across something rather peculiar in the school's auditorium -- Angel Player. It's something that's somewhat familiar to him, though even then, he's not really sure how it ever got there and underneath the bleachers to begin with. It definitely wasn't there before, so... why now? Is it connected to the events going on lately somehow? He's just not sure. Ever since then, he has been keeping it to himself; however, at this point, he figures he should at least bring it up to Yuri and Naoi.

For now though, he'll first make a general announcement to make sure everyone's alright...]

Hey everyone. This is Otonashi. I know things have been getting pretty weird here the past couple months, with the last few weeks probably being even worse. Those monsters that were roaming around are called shadows. They... basically eat people, I guess, and then turn them into NPCs. Though I'm guessing you guys all figured that out the hard way by now... But anyway, I just wanted to make sure that everyone was alright. I know some of you got turned into NPCs during the event, so are you guys okay now? It seems like everything's fine now at least, so you can probably all go back to doing whatever you were doing before. If anyone sees anything weird again though, let me know, okay?

And... Yuri? Naoi? Can we meet up? I have something to show you-- w-woah!

[And then suddenly the chair he was sitting on collapses... And with it, so does Otonashi, who also slams his hand onto the keyboard on his way down. From off screen, he can be heard panicking a bit...]

What the... W-what the hell is this?! Oh come on! I didn't even mean for this to... D-damn it!

[...and then he stands back up, forgetting that the video feed is still playing. One of his hands now has a knife-looking thing attached to it, which he keeps flailing around.]

How do I even get this thing off?! What the fu-- g-gah!

Barricaded myself in the SSS headquarters a few days ago, but I'm running low on supplies now. (I had some water bottles and bags of chips but they're gone now.)

Teachers still trying to get in. Anyone know what's going on?

Can someone with a good arm throw some of the packaged sandwiches from the cafeteria up here? Window is open. I'd jump out, but I'm not giving up this place! Any SSS members who want to help, try to find a way in without using the door or the password or the NPCs will get in.

I repeat: The window is open. Good luck.

[ Yuri will reply via text or voice from the headquarters' laptop. If you can find a way in (probably via scaling the wall somehow or pulling a Batman), feel free to action spam this post! Same old, same old, pretty much. Yet, they picked today to start paying attention to him, and now he had to pay the consequences.

In fact, she remembers a bit more than she did before. Still not Otonashi, but the SSS forming and everyone else in it. There's a more confident air about her than before, if possible. More professional, perhaps? Or more authoritative? There's just a slightly different air about her than how she seemed to still be trying to push her way around and figure out what she was doing.

...and also wondering why the hell there's candy inside his shoe locker. Who put that there? He doesn't.. have a Valentine... the person he would have even remotely wanted to give it to isn't even here, so it hardly matters, right...?! Though he doesn't want it himself, so he'll carry it on him while he walks around campus with a can of coffee, seeing if he can give it up to anyone, maybe...

And of course, when he arrives in his room, he finds a small gift bag resting beside his bed. Within it, he finds some manga he had purchased for his sister, back when they were both alive. It gives him incredible nostalgia, really, and maybe some melancholy. All those random carelessly picked shoujo mangas...!

...Except there's one other manga sitting in this bag too. One he... doesn't recognize... squint...]

Hey, this is... [Flipping through the pages...] Wait, what the... What the hell is this?!

[The cute little shoujo manga aside, there also happened to be some explicit... other manga... doujins... Okay, he knows he didn't get his sister this...!

But regardless of whether he did or not, he does want to get rid of it already. Like wow what is he looking at this is some crazy kinky stuff um. So he decides to slip out of his room to get rid of it before his new roommate can find it...! And hopefully he won't run into anyone else on his way out of the boys' dorm, or even on his way around campus.

Of course, characters just may bump into him anyway. cough.]
