SSS members: headquarters to pick up arms. Now. I have enough for each of you. If the shadows are going to start appearing again, I want all of you ready.

We're not going to Guild this time. We're standing and fighting and defending anyone who can't, that stupid NPC they're after or otherwise. If you can't fight, you're taking a weapon just in case. Don't do anything stupid and run if you have to. Those of you who can't fight, come talk to me right away.

[ Yuri sighs, her voice taking on a singsong tone, like she's trying to act like it's not a huge problem. After all, if everyone's terrified then it only makes things worse. ]

I've had it up to here with that stupid boy NPC's face, he should've stayed gone after I shot him in that dumb mug the first time!

I'll cut to the chase: I have a few more guns with clips available. You know the type. I don't care who takes them as long as they're not raging idiots who shouldn't handle guns in the first place.

I don't know how many we're going to need. Keep them with you until I find out. You're a good enough fighter with generally good intentions. If there's anyone outside the SSS I'd trust, you're it.

[he listens along just fine until she starts on about that stuff, at which point he's suddenly glad this isn't a live video feed. The face he just made at the mention of trust is one he wouldn't want anyone ever to see. He quickly schools the stunned look off his face and takes a long, slow sigh before replying, scowling with annoyance.]

The only reason I won't bitch you out for that is because this isn't the time.

You'd better keep in contact.

[tenminutes]

Like I'd let it drop so long as I'm still standing. I'm a team player, you know.

[ There's a clear chipper tone in Yuri's voice, but she sobers up after a second. ]

You two though. I know you can probably kick those shadows halfway across the campus, but better safe than sorry.

Probably, but I know I can't count on my ability 100% here. That's why I'm still using a gun.

[There's an unspoken 'just in case' here. Ignoring the several months he spent powerless, he recalls at least one distinct time when his powers wouldn't work on something here. During the blizzard. Part of him wonders whether he'd have been able to get into that mysterious car had his powers returned by then, but he'll never have the true answer to that question.]

Back-up plans are practically required here.

[ She knows to all hell never to rely on only one thing. There are always too many variables. ]

What is it?

The bare minimum conditions that need to be met for a shadow to 'get' someone. I want specifics.

[He has this vague general idea that physical contact is a no-no and should be avoided at all costs. That's... about it.]

[tenminutes]

It'll try to cover you completely. It doesn't have 'strength' per se since it doesn't have muscles, so if it 'grabs' you, it's got you and you have to get it with something non-organic to separate yourself or it's got you. Once it has you, it'll hover around you for a little while, then it pulls you into the ground. Someone can pull you out if they can destroy the thing while it's taking you.

[ She pauses for a moment. ] I think. I haven't actually seen it happen. I wasn't present for when we lost people or we wouldn't have lost them. I just remember what it feels like to get sucked in.

[onewayroad]

So someone's salvageable prior to being pulled into the ground, and skin contact doesn't automatically fuck them over.

Good.

[tenminutes]

No, skin contact is dangerous but if you can get out of it before they pull you in you'll be fine.

Planning on punching one in the face?

[onewayroad]

Only if there are no better methods of dealing with them at the time.

[tenminutes]

Well there-- [ The feed's just going to cut out suddenly. ]

Yuri?

Oi. Yuri. What the hell was that?

[tenminutes]

[ The feed doesn't turn back on. Accelerator might spot her actually sitting in class later, however, wearing the regular uniform and passing a note to another classmate. ]

[onewayroad]

[he isn't in the classroom building much, but he's staying on the move due to the shadows just in case, so spotting her in class can happen. Wow. that is a weird sight. Yuri in the other uniform. This can't be normal.

In fact, that's exactly why he pulls out his cell phone and sends her a quick text message from where he is in the hallway:]

hey dumbass what's with the uniform change?

[and now to see how she responds, if she does.]

[tenminutes]

[ The phone goes off, still in her pocket, but the sound wasn't turned off. Instead of what she normally would've done and answered it right away without so much as blinking, she seems to actually jump a little in her seat, dropping the note on the floor. Some of the other students look over at her and the teacher asks if there's something wrong and for her to turn off her phone during class, which she quickly does and tucks it inside her desk.

After that, she promptly ducks her head behind her textbook like she's trying very much to not draw attention to herself. One of the NPCs next to her looks like it's trying not to laugh a little at her behavior. She won't respond to the text until after class. Luckily it's only about 10 more minutes. Once it seems like the class is breaking, Yuri picks up the phone and seems to stare at it for a moment. The NPC that was borderline snickering at her before pokes her in the side, then takes the phone from her and holds it up, teasing her about it being a secret boyfriend as Yuri gets up and grabs it, her hand on the NPC's shoulder.

When she finally texts back, albeit a little confusedly since the NPCs don't normally have phones, it says this: ]

What are you talking about?

[Accelerator is still out in the hallway, although he's moved further down it and past the classroom a little. he reads the text reply that finally came and frowns.]

don't "what are you talking about" me. you know damn well what I mean.

[tenminutes]

I'm wearing the regular uniform. same one everyone else wears.

did you ditch class?

[onewayroad]

yeah see that's fucked up you never wear that one.

why the hell would I ever attend class?

[tenminutes]

Why would I wear anything other than the uniform to school?

Accelerator, you're supposed to go to class. We'll get in trouble if we don't.

[onewayroad]

because that stupid group you created has its own uniform or something, genius.

punishments are pointless here. and since when have you ever cared about "getting in trouble"?

What stupid group? The only club I'm in is track.
